From here you’ll venture out onto the glacier, traversing the crevasses and discovering what a living phenomena the alpine glaciers really are. You could be on Everest or any of the dizzy 4000m plus high mountain summits around Mont Blanc as you traverse across this alpine wilderness, surrounded by some of the most breathtaking views you’ll ever see.
The Mer de Glace advances between 90m to 130m per annum and has a surface area of over 40km2. It’s a place where numerous scientific experiments have been carried out since the 1870’s.
After adventuring and learning mountaineering craft on the top of the glacier it’s time to descend into the heart of this frozen world via the Ice Grotto.
The Ice Grotto has been re-cut every year for the past 50 years and houses a chalet completely sculpted from ice as well as a collection of mountaineering memorabilia from the last 100 years.
After the Ice Grotto we enjoy a well earned beverage on the panoramic terrace before taking the Montenvers Mountain Railway train back down to Chamonix through the lush alpine forest. |
